The Sense behind Social Media

How good are you at connecting with people?

When I was kid, my social network was called “outside”!  It was a great deal simpler then.  Today, phenomena like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and others have changed the social scene significantly.  Take a look at these interesting facts about social media in a study done by The Social Media Examiner last year:

  • By spending as little as 6 hours per week, 64%+ of marketers see lead generation benefits with social media.
  • 75% of marketers reporting positive results in terms of traffic increase as one of the major benefits of social media.
  • A significant 89% of all businesses that have a dedicated social media platform as part of their marketing strategy reported an increase in their market exposure.
  • More than half of marketers who have used social media marketing for over 3 years reported an increase in sales over that period.

Is social media important for your business?  Goodness, why are you even asking?!

Social Media as explained by Three Ships Media

The first step is simply finding out where your customers spend their time online and join them.  Not everyone is on Facebook.  Consider what is appropriate for the industry you’re in.

The next step is posting, sharing relevant content and interacting with people on the social media platform where all your customers are.  You’re cultivating a community (remember the garden analogy from before).  Your products or services are getting exposure bit by bit, so remember that utilising social media is not an immediate marketing ploy, but takes time and effort.  Post regularly – once a day for Facebook, more frequently for Twitter.  Use content that provokes a discussion, draws people in.  In this respect, visuals (pictures, diagrams, charts, all that stuff) can go a long way in attracting attention.

Lastly, all successful online businesses use their website as a central point to tie in all their social media accounts, so make sure that process is streamlined and well integrated (if you haven’t a clue, mail me).
